Central Pa. artist’s design for ‘The Woman King’ film wins competition and worldwide recognition

Central Pennsylvania native Dionn Reneé was already excited for the upcoming premiere of Sony Entertainment’s film “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis. But she didn’t expect to be part of the promotional effort.

Renee, a graduate of the Middletown Area School District, works as a visual artist, graphic designer and photographer in the entertainment industry. She painted portraits of Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg and Maya Angelou, who displayed her portrait in her office.

Recently, a friend told her about a movie poster design contest that Sony had launched for the upcoming movie and she decided to enter.

“Initially, I just wanted to see the movie,” she said. “I’ve never tried a competition like this before and decided to give it a shot.”

Fast forward a few weeks later, Reneé was chosen as one of the contest’s top 10 winners and one of only three American artists selected. Her work has been featured in the film’s global marketing campaign, including social media, print materials and merchandise.

“I’ve always been an international artist, but now I’m a world-class artist. This project pushed me a little further than I was, but the whole experience was incredibly fun,” said Reneé.

“The Woman King” is the story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. Faced with a new threat, General Nanisca, played by Viola Davis, forms the next generation of recruits to fight against an alien enemy determined to destroy their way of life.

In addition to graduating from Middletown, Reneé is also a graduate of Temple University, Tyler School of Art and Temple, Rome (Italy). She obtained a double major in fine arts and graphic design.

As a child, Reneé said she was diagnosed with lupus and struggled with the debilitating symptoms that come with the disease. For the past few years, she said she practiced mixed martial arts training, rigorous physical training and a healthy lifestyle to fight him.

The film is set to hit theaters everywhere on September 16.
