ELKINS – The Elkins-Randolph County Chamber is pleased to announce its flagship business for the month of December 2021, Artists at Work, located at 369 Davis Avenue in downtown Elkins.
Artists at Work was founded as a cooperative gallery by five local artists in 1993. In one year, the cooperative added 15 more artists with a variety of arts and crafts. It was the first full-time art cooperative to operate in West Virginia and has included many of the region’s best-known and award-winning artists throughout its 28-year history. Currently, there are 20 artist-members who contribute equally to the expenses of the gallery and take turns working as a merchant.
The mission of Artists at Work is to promote the development of artists’ careers by offering them an exhibition space and a retail outlet; create a diverse, quality and ever-changing cultural experience for locals, students and tourists to shop / view contemporary arts and crafts handmade in West Virginia; and engage our community in the artistic experience through demonstrations and participation in downtown promotional events. Their goal has always been to create a friendly and welcoming space where visitors can browse and talk about art making, as well as shop for affordable gifts or pieces for their home.
In the Davis Avenue store, you’ll find fine art paintings and prints, photography, pottery, glass, textile art, jewelry, musical instruments, and wood products. The Artists at Work cooperative business model means that 100% of the sales generated go to the manufacturer and the store’s operating expenses are shared equally. Members form a jury when there are vacancies in order to offer a variety of media.
Artists at Work strives to connect with a wide range of people as an anchor for the arts and as an integral part of the cultural and commercial fabric of Randolph County. The store is a key destination for tourists visiting downtown Elkins. Over the years, Artists at Work has participated in many downtown business promotion events, most recently the Fall Scarecrow Project hosted by Our Town.
