‘Moment in Time’ opens at NorthWind next month | News, Sports, Jobs

SARANAC LAKE – A new exhibit opens at NorthWind Fine Arts in Saranac Lake next month.

The exhibition, “Moments in Time,” features photographer Russ Hartung and fine art painter Mary Woodcock Johnson.

Johnson’s new oil paintings explore the landscape and animals of the Adirondacks. Walking the local trails for the past two years has inspired her to paint the natural environment bringing color, form and composition to her work. She found the calm and beauty of the changing seasons inspired her to return to oil painting. Although seasons are a frequent topic, Johnson’s work on this show features many fall pieces. She often works in series. The exhibition includes paintings of its water lily guests and a series of paths in the woods. Johnson’s earlier work has focused on characters and their environments; she included a solitary figure in the show as a nod to her painting history.

“For me, a ‘Moment in Time’ is the perfect description of my muse,” said Hartung. I’m happy to sit on top of a mountain for hours waiting for the perfect moment when light and shadow create the right interaction. Sometimes I will wait in the woods, or in a photo store, to capture the perfect “gesture” of a wildlife subject, or I will rise early in the morning to capture the soft, moisture-laden landscape at a time when the most of the world is still asleep.

“My goal is to capture this moment and display it in a way that allows others to experience a bit of this moment for themselves,” he said.

The gallery is located at 85 Main Street. Gallery hours are daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
