While driving on I-45, you may have noticed a change in the appearance of the Sam Houston State University golf course. A new orange sign proudly displays that this month marks the official rebranding of the Raven Nest Golf Course to the Bearkat Course.
This rebranding of the course will include revitalization projects around the facility and bring name recognition to a wider audience for a golf course already well established in the community.
âLast year, when the university took over the city of Huntsville golf course, I wondered how we could take this and use it to our advantage. It became clear that the way to achieve this was to use the strong branding power of SHSU and change the name of the golf course, âsaid Rich Ballinger, Director of PGA Golf Management and Course Operations. of golf. âWe found potential names and presented them to various stakeholders in golf courses, communities and universities through focus groups. The vast majority of these groups have adopted the name Bearkat Course.
The SHSU Bearkat Course is home to the SHSU Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams, the PGA’s Golf Management Program, and is fully open to the public. Over the past two years, golf has seen a resurgence in participation as an outdoor activity. Nationwide rounds of golf have increased by 60%, and these same trends are also being seen locally.
âWe are setting records with laps and income,â Ballinger said. âWhat this allows us to do is reinvest it in the golf course itself with a new fleet of golf carts, maintenance equipment and toilets on the course. We will continue to reinvest that money in the golf course.
Another reason for the record attendance is that the Bearkat Course remains one of the best values ââin golf. The 18-hole public facility is consistently rated as one of the best courses in Texas, including being rated # 6 for Best Economy Course by Dallas Morning News, # 3 for Best Value by Avid Golfer Houston, and No. 1 of the best overall value under $ 40 per Avid Houston Golfer.
“We bring tremendous value to the community by being the only 18-hole public golf course in Walker County,” said Ballinger. âWe are proud to be the home golf course for the Huntsville High School Golf Team, SHSU teams and the PGA Management Program. It is also a great recreational opportunity for our university students as they can play 18 holes for just $ 9.
Amenities at the Bearkat Course also include an expansive workout facility perfect for working on all aspects of your game, and the 19th Hole Lounge, conveniently located next to the on-site pro shop, offers food and drink for kids. daily games as well as accommodation for any golf event.
The Bearkat Course is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with special reduced daily rates available for SHSU students, SHSU alumni, government employees, and senior golfers. In order to develop the game of golf with the next generation, junior golfers under the age of 15 can play their rounds for free when an adult pays the general rate.
The Bearkat Course is also happy to offer great value for the whole family with family golf subscriptions or semester subscriptions for students. For more information, contact the golf shop at 936-294-GOLF or visit bearkatcourse.com.
