WALDOBORO – What a day on the course for Camden-Rockport and the nearly 200 young long distance athletes at the Busline League Cross Country Championships on October 21 at Medomak Valley High School.

On a cloudy and rainy Thursday afternoon, a fine performance was delivered by the Schooners, who won the team competitions with perfect or near-perfect scores, as well as the individual titles thanks to two light-footed CRMS riders.

That day, 195 student-athletes completed the 2.1 mile trail course.

In the women’s 93-runner race, Siena Scordino of CRMS was first in 13: 41.06 to outrun teammate and finalist Flynn Layton (13: 47.76).

In the men’s 102-rider race, schooner Will Meyer edged the field in 12: 45.65. Meyer’s teammate Graham Stoughton was second in 13: 17.31.

In the team competition, the schooners dominated the course with perfect or near-perfect performances.

The CRMS boys finished with a perfect score of 15, which meant there were first through fifth scoring runners. In fact, the Schooners proved to be so dominant that they finished with seven of the top eight runners, including Warren Beverage of North Haven, who was third in 13: 19.11.

North Haven didn’t have five scoring runners, so Beverage’s spot was not included in the team’s score, giving CRMS the top five spots and a perfect score.

For the girls, CRMS finished with 16 points, one less than perfect, with the first, second, third, fourth and sixth points.

The schooner boys finished with a total team time of 1: 06: 27.42 and a runner’s average time of 13: 17.49, while the schooner girls finished with a total team time of 1: 10: 13.72, with an average runner time of 14: 02.75.
