Hello, Doctor Taylor Swift! The popstar recently gave a lengthy but very moving speech to the class of 2021 and 2022 at New York University.
In addition to being the first speaker of Today’s Rites, the GRAMMY-winning singer also received an honor only given to certain people who have made an impact on the University and the community.
Taylor Swift Receives Honorary Doctorate from New York University
Chronicling her brief prep trip in an Instagram reel, the “Speak Now” hitmaker had a huge day early as she received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from New York University.
Only a few people received honorary degrees from the prestigious university. These include music icon Aretha Franklin, Taiwanese film legend Ang Lee, former President Bill Clinton, outgoing Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Hollywood film star Billy Crystal and of the current Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
New York University Senior Vice President of Public Affairs John Beckman explained that recipients of honorary degrees are chosen for distinction or achievement in areas taught and sought by the school, including science, social sciences, humanities, arts, law, medicine and business. “We select recipients whose talents, accomplishments and actions will serve as role models for our graduates,” Beckman said.
“I know it can be very difficult to know who to be and when. Who you are now and how to act to get where you want to go. I have good news: it’s up to you. I have also terrifying news: it’s up to you.” – @taylorswift13 pic.twitter.com/Y8mEwqgdZw

Along with the humility she received, Taylor Swift also gave a rousing speech for the graduating class of 2021 and 2022.
In her speech, Swift offered “life hacks” for new grads, talked about female role models and how to live with “grinding your teeth.”
“You will look back on your life and cringe in retrospect. Grinding your teeth is inevitable in a lifetime…You can’t avoid it so don’t try – for all of 2012, I dressed like a 1950s housewife!,” Swift joked.
“Welcome to New York, she was waiting for you.”
