The School of Public Policy co-organizes the United Nations Winter School on Global Sustainable Solutions 2022, a free workshop open to all UMass Amherst graduate students.
The course, which will run from January 6-20, offers students the opportunity to learn and network with practitioners and scholars in the field of international sustainability, with a particular focus on water security and ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation.
“This year, once again, our program will include leading experts from around the world,” said Professor Marta Vicarelli of the School of Public Policy and Department of Economics, who organized the course with Professor Nidhi Nagabhatla of United Nations University and McMaster.
“One of the best things about the Winter School is that it can act as a catalyst for the professional development of its participants,” continued Vicarelli. “Over the past year, many of our students have developed professional collaborations with the lecturers and with students from other universities, including consulting, presenting at conferences, and even developing peer-reviewed academic papers. .”
This is the second year of the United Nations Winter School, which is sponsored by the School of Public Policy, United Nations University and McMaster University, as well as the Environmental Partnership and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), a global alliance of UN agencies, NGOs and institutes. This year, the Winter School is also supported by the United Nations University’s Climate Resilience Initiative, focused on proactively tackling the increase in extreme flooding in Europe.
Graduate students from all three universities are welcome to apply for the program, which is free and limited to 25 students. The deadline to apply is December 24.
Students will attend seminars every Tuesday and Thursday, where they will hear from UN and PEDRR speakers. The course will also include class discussions and weekly assignments.
In September, Vicarelli and Nagabhatla delivered a keynote address on the UN Winter School at a virtual global symposium hosted by PEDRR, which aims to replicate the model in other countries.
Interested students should apply online before midnight on December 24. Email Vicarelli with any questions.
