A former graphic design student from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Art and Design program, housed in the School of Performing and Visual Arts, was honored at one of the most the advertising industry’s top creative competitions – the National American Advertising Federation’s ADDY Awards. — at a recent gala and celebration in Nashville, Tennessee.
Sydney Beech, a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and a native of Ellisville, Mississippi, won an ADDY Gold in Outdoor & Ambient Media: Poster Campaign for her “St Pete Conservation Festival Poster Set.
“It’s been a great year for the Graphic Design program and our students,” said Jacob Cotton, Associate Professor in the Art and Design program. “They have won countless national awards and been featured in numerous national publications for their work. These awards help show potential employers the caliber work our students are capable of and they help our students see where their hard work can take them.
“Each year, our students’ work is well represented in the national ADDYs competition after moving through the district level to reach this stage of the competition,” Cotton added. “But this is only the second time in USM history that one of our students has won a National ADDY. Beech is well deserving of this award as one of our best students – her work ethic and ability to thrive during this pandemic is second to none and we are extremely proud of her.
Beech shared how she felt about representing USM in the pageant and thanked all members of the Southern Miss Art and Design program for positively influencing its development through continued support.
“It was such an honor to be able to represent USM at the Nationals this year and winning a gold medal was a pleasant surprise,” she said. “This is an opportunity that only a small number of students in the country can experience and I couldn’t be more grateful!”
“I am also grateful for the support I received from the Art and Design program,” she added. “For me, this award not only represents my hard work, but also the hard work and passion of everyone behind the program. Southern Miss had a huge impact on my life and winning this award was a wonderful way for me to end my time as a student.
For this project, Beech was commissioned to develop a brand, style guide and materials for a select conference or event. The location chosen from a list served as the main inspiration for its brand. It was important that the brand and theme be in context with the subject of the conference and the region and history of the venue chosen. Beech selected St. Petersburg, Florida for his project and created the St. Pete Conservation Festival, a two-day ocean conservation festival aimed at teens to educate them about the issue in an engaging way.
For the design, Beech was inspired by the tiles used in the Mediterranean architecture that can be seen in the city. The square format of the tiles gave rise to the idea of creating organized patterns that could fit into square and rectangular formats. The American Advertising Awards, home of the ADDY® Award, attract nearly 35,000 professional and student nominations each year. The three-tier competition begins at the local level and the winners then compete at the district level. District winners advance to the third tier, the national stage of the American Advertising Awards.
